Middlesex University Dubai recently concluded its inaugural immersive four-day Generative AI Conclave: LangChain Certification Programme from 17 to 18 and 24 to 25 February 2024. Students delved into the realms of generative AI with interactive sessions, engaging keynote speeches, and a stimulating hackathon, exploring the potential of LangChain technology.Highlights of the Generative AI Conclave included:LangChain Certification Course: An end-to-end LangChain certification course recommended by LangChain themselves.Interactive Keynote Speeches: Distinguished keynote speakers shared insights into the latest cutting-edge AI trends, offering valuable perspectives on the future of generative AI.Hands-On Hackathon: This was the highlight of the event where participants collaborated, competed, and innovated to tackle real-world challenges using generative AI techniques.Networking Opportunities: Attendees had the chance to connect with peers, professionals, and pioneers in the field offering them collaborative opportunities.Study Materials: Participants also received a complete pack of Gen AI study materials and in-house-developed cheat sheets to further explore the topic of generative AI.The Conclave attracted a diverse audience, including AI enthusiasts, data science professionals, students, and industry experts with varying levels of expertise in Data Science and Python coding.Missed out on this transformative event? Accounting and Finance Team conclude another successful Financial Modeling Club (FMC 2.0)

The students of the Accounting and Finance Department celebrated the success of the second edition of the Financial Modeling Club (FMC2.0) on 6 March 2024. Led by students, this year’s FMC 2.0 featured four upskilling workshops and two competitions. A total of fifty-five students secured the Foundations Certificate in Financial Modeling, offered by our academic partner, FMI. Special congratulations to Chirag Kherajani for earning the Financial Modeling Institute scholarship for Advanced Financial Modeling certification.Under the mentorship of student trainers Chirag Kherajani, Himanshu Kimtani, and Reuben Jude, the initiative thrived with the support of our academic partner FMI who provided scholarship opportunities for our students, while Paul Coulombe from FMI actively supported the team.This initiative was founded a year ago by Vandhana Rajesh, Shyam Satish and Samson Dsouza who have since graduated from Middlesex University Dubai.Dr Pallavi Kishore, Head of Accounting and Finance, said: “Financial modeling has become an essential skill in the contemporary landscape, and we’ve adeptly integrated it into our programmes to ensure our students are 100% employable.”The team showcased their dedication through logo-embedded T-shirts, symbolising their commitment on how they go beyond to celebrate student achievements. All the participants, Foundations badge holders, competition winners and student trainers were felicitated at the grand finale organised on campus.

Organised by Professor Fehmida Hussain and led by Chinnu George, the field trip offered students a deep dive into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI).This enriching experience, facilitated through a panel discussion, allowed students to delve into AI's evolving landscape, emphasising future trends and ethical challenges. Addressing pivotal topics such as AI ethics, data privacy, and the societal ramifications of AI technologies, fostering an in-depth comprehension of AI's dual-edged potential in contemporary society was at the forefront of the conversation.The event’s attendees represented a diverse range of academic disciplines, including undergraduates from the BSc Honours Information Technology programme and postgraduates specialising in Cybersecurity and Pen Testing (CSPT), Network Management and Cloud Computing (NMCC), and Data Science. This diverse academic representation underscored the interdisciplinary nature of AI and its applicability across various fields.One of the prominent themes that emerged from the festival was the critical importance of integrating ethical considerations into AI development and application processes. Discussions centred around principles such as transparency, accountability, and human-centric design, with a focus on cultivating a responsible approach to AI technology use.The festival not only heightened students' awareness regarding algorithmic bias, data privacy, and ethical dilemmas in AI decision-making but also ignited a collective aspiration to contribute to ethical and sustainable AI solutions, steering society towards a more equitable and thoughtful future in technology.One of the students, Naadir Mohamed (MSc Cyber Security and Pen Testing), said: “As a postgraduate student specialising in Cybersecurity and Penetration Testing, attending the AI Film Festival at Expo City Dubai was particularly insightful. In March, both the third-year January cohort and first-year September cohort students embarked on a field trip to explore the UAE Innovates Exhibition and the DHL Innovation Hub. It was a significant educational venture, aiming to bridge academic concepts with real-world applications in Innovation and Logistics.At the UAE Innovates Exhibition, students were immersed in interactive sessions and technology demonstrations, showcasing advancements in AI, robotics, and sustainable solutions. This immersive experience not only deepened their understanding of the innovation cycle but also shed light on the challenges and rewards of bringing new ideas to market. The visit to the DHL Innovation Hub complemented this experience by offering a glimpse into the complex world of logistics, where professionals shared insights on operational strategies, technological integration, and the global impact of efficient supply chain management.This field trip played a vital role in augmenting students' comprehension of theoretical concepts by providing hands-on experiences and direct interaction with industry experts. Exposure to both the exhibition and DHL operations ignited students' interest in innovative and logistical fields, inspiring them to consider these dynamic sectors for future career paths. By aligning educational objectives with experiential learning, the field trip not only enriched the students' academic journey but also motivated them to explore the potential of becoming the next generation of innovators and leaders in an ever-evolving global landscape.Second-year Cybersecurity students also had the honour of visiting the Samsung Smart Things Hub in the neighbouring Dubai Internet City recently with Dr Judhi Prasetyo. Guided by Samsung technical staff, students had the chance to experience various Internet-connected smart devices of varied brands controlled using the Samsung Smart Things application. From smart doorbells enabling remote interaction with visitors to smart refrigerators that suggest menus and place orders for out-of-stock items, students gained firsthand experience of cutting-edge technology in action.Engie Bashir, the UG CPC of CEI, emphasised the significance of field trips in students' learning journeys: “Field trips are a cornerstone of students’ learning journeys in CEI. They offer students a unique lens through which they can witness the application of their studies in the real world. It's one thing to learn about theories and technologies in the classroom; it's another to see them in action, solving real-world problems. These experiences are invaluable—they spark a profound passion for innovation.”

Middlesex University Dubai A&F Students Win CFA Institute Research Challenge, Local Finals

A&F students from Middlesex University, Dubai, have once again won the local CFA Research Challenge 2023–24. The final year BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance students Jiten Harwani, Mahek Kherajani, Yusuf Hussain, Aakriti Gupta, and Syeda Farvah Zaidi represented our team.This prestigious event was organised by CFA Society Emirates in association with Abu Dhabi Global Markets (ADGM). A total of seven teams participated, including the American University of Dubai (AUD), the University of Wollongong, the University of Birmingham, and Heriot-Watt University. The competition required students to provide their investment recommendations for AD Ports, the flagship port operator in Abu Dhabi. The students presented their equity research findings based on an in-depth analysis of the industry, financials, ESG, investment risks, and valuation.Our students impressed the judges, the competition organisers (all CFA charter holders), faculty mentors, and students from other universities by winning the competition. The students won a full scholarship sponsored by Morgan International and PWC Academy to pursue a CFA Level 1 course.Huge congratulations to our brilliant students and the tireless and supportive faculty mentor, Rashita Puthiya, and industry mentor, Mr. Ali Wadood, for their valuable guidance over the past four months. Under the direction of Dr. Pallavi Kishore and with assistance from the A&F Faculty Team, the Accounting & Finance (A&F) Department actively guided students in their pursuit of success in extracurricular and career development activities in addition to their academic degrees. Over the past six years, A&F students have won in several inter-university competitions, won the prestigious local CFA Research Challenge four times (2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024), and placed first runner-up in 2019 and 2023.The Middlesex University Dubai team will now represent CFA Society Emirates at the EMEA sub- regional finals in March 2024.

By aligning educational objectives with experiential learning, the field trip not only enriched the students' academic journey but also motivated them to explore the potential of becoming the next generation of innovators and leaders in an ever-evolving global landscape.Second-year Cybersecurity students also had the honour of visiting the Samsung Smart Things Hub in the neighbouring Dubai Internet City recently with Dr Judhi Prasetyo. Guided by Samsung technical staff, students had the chance to experience various Internet-connected smart devices of varied brands controlled using the Samsung Smart Things application. From smart doorbells enabling remote interaction with visitors to smart refrigerators that suggest menus and place orders for out-of-stock items, students gained firsthand experience of cutting-edge technology in action.Engie Bashir, the UG CPC of CEI, emphasised the significance of field trips in students' learning journeys: “Field trips are a cornerstone of students’ learning journeys in CEI. They offer students a unique lens through which they can witness the application of their studies in the real world. It's one thing to learn about theories and technologies in the classroom; it's another to see them in action, solving real-world problems. These experiences are invaluable—they spark a profound passion for innovation.”

Middlesex University Dubai A&F Students Win CFA Institute Research Challenge, Local Finals

A&F students from Middlesex University, Dubai, have once again won the local CFA Research Challenge 2023–24. The final year BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance students Jiten Harwani, Mahek Kherajani, Yusuf Hussain, Aakriti Gupta, and Syeda Farvah Zaidi represented our team.This prestigious event was organised by CFA Society Emirates in association with Abu Dhabi Global Markets (ADGM). A total of seven teams participated, including the American University of Dubai (AUD), the University of Wollongong, the University of Birmingham, and Heriot-Watt University. The competition required students to provide their investment recommendations for AD Ports, the flagship port operator in Abu Dhabi. The students presented their equity research findings based on an in-depth analysis of the industry, financials, ESG, investment risks, and valuation.Our students impressed the judges, the competition organisers (all CFA charter holders), faculty mentors, and students from other universities by winning the competition. The students won a full scholarship sponsored by Morgan International and PWC Academy to pursue a CFA Level 1 course.Huge congratulations to our brilliant students and the tireless and supportive faculty mentor, Rashita Puthiya, and industry mentor, Mr. Ali Wadood, for their valuable guidance over the past four months. Under the direction of Dr. Pallavi Kishore and with assistance from the A&F Faculty Team, the Accounting & Finance (A&F) Department actively guided students in their pursuit of success in extracurricular and career development activities in addition to their academic degrees. Over the past six years, A&F students have won in several inter-university competitions, won the prestigious local CFA Research Challenge four times (2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024), and placed first runner-up in 2019 and 2023.The Middlesex University Dubai team will now represent CFA Society Emirates at the EMEA sub- regional finals in March 2024.
