Hamda Al Hosani
In 2019, the Honorary Doctorate was awarded to Hamda Al Hosani, an Emirati sprinter with 17 Special Olympic medals to her name.
She won gold at the Special Olympic Games in Abu Dhabi in the 200-metre sprint and two silver medals: one in the 100 metre and one in the 4x100m relay. Having been diagnosed with epilepsy, Hamda has never let the condition set her back, instead she is eager to encourage children to believe in themselves and embrace sport.
Her goals are to win more medals and to challenge the misconceptions surrounding those with disabilities. She has become a figurehead for the Special Olympics movement thanks to her tenacity, commitment, and sheer talent. A natural mentor, she has been seen by many as the face of Team UAE.
MDX Dubai is pleased to award Hamda with an honorary degree for her exemplary work in the field of sports and the role she has had in inspiring and empowering people of determination throughout the Arab world and particularly in the United Arab Emirates. Every day she raises the profile of women in sports and changes the perception of people with special needs within society.
Since receiving her honorary degree from MDX Dubai Hamda has continued to compete and inspire other athletes. Her attitude and resilience is a testament to her character and mirrors how MDX Dubai feels about inclusivity and ensuring all people of determination are supported and offered every opportunity to succeed possible.
