Team “Pinnacle” from Middlesex University Dubai were declared the winners of the fifth CIMA Global Business Challenge Middle East regional finals on Thursday, May 30, 2013. The team will now represent the region at the global final in South Africa at the end of August, which will see 24 teams from across the world compete for the CIMA trophy. This is the second year in a row that a team from Middlesex wins the regional finals. Last year’s winners went on to secure a spot in the top six teams globally after a thrilling finale in Sri Lanka.
The team consists of four incredibly talented business students: Chitra Idnani, Madhuri Kumar, Lakshmi Sreekumar and Mohammed Baseer. They impressed a panel of five high profile judges from Barclays, the Department of Finance, DUBAL and Unilever with their outstanding analysis of this year’s case study and their professional presentation skills.
The Team beat students from five other universities and were awarded the regional CIMA trophy and a DSLR camera with a fully loaded kit. In addition to winning the top spot, one of the team members, Madhuri Kumar, walked away with the Best Speaker award.
Dr Vijaya Kumar, lecturer at Middlesex University Dubai, who mentored the winning team and helped them prepare for the competition, said: “The CIMA Global Business Challenge is a unique competition. It is an opportunity for students to use their management and finance skills and knowledge in a real life situation, engage in applied learning of business strategy and develop their leadership potential. Our students found the entire experience rewarding and are very excited to be given the honour of representing the Middle East region at the global finals. They worked very hard over the last couple of months to prepare their report and presentation, and they drew on their experience in different business areas.”
The CIMA Global Business Challenge is an annual competition which requires students to analyse a case study based on a set of scenarios, and provide innovative solutions and recommendations to the Board on how to proceed. The competition attracts thousands of entries from all over the world and this year Middlesex University Dubai was one of only six teams in the Middle East Region that made it to the Regional Finals, out of more than 100 entries.
