World Mental Health Awareness Day 2017

  • Monday, 30 October 2017

Last week, Middlesex University Dubai hosted an array of events across campus in accordance with World Mental Health Awareness Day. The theme was ‘Curbing Anxiety’, with stalls and activities organised to inform and support students and to raise awareness of anxiety and mental health issues. The day was organised by Middlesex University Dubai’s School of Psychology, Student Activities Club, Team Middlesex and the Student Baking Club.

Activities and stalls included a ‘Shred Your Worries’ stall, along with a ‘Pin Your Silver Lining’ arch to encourage students to think positively. There was also Resilience and Wellbeing stalls and a questionnaire allowing students to assess their own wellbeing, along with an information desk to raise awareness of the different aspects of anxiety.

Andrew Wright and Mariam El Halawani – two amazing therapists from ATIC, gave a workshop on the relationship between art therapy and anxiety. Our very own Psychology Lecturer and Clinical Director of HRIC, Dr Thoraiya Kanafani presented a session on recognising and curbing anxiety. Our Year 2 Psychology student Omar took a very brave step and gave students an account of how he copes with anxiety which was truly inspirational for all who were able to attend.

The day ended with a palliative yoga session with the wonderful Maria Paz – showcasing the calming benefits of Yoga.
