Middlesex University Dubai’s Mooting Society Meeting

  • Tuesday, 22 May 2018

Middlesex University Dubai’s Mooting Society held a meeting on 17 May 2018 with various prominent guest speakers.

The meeting began with a panel discussion with students who participated in the 2018 Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna. The students shared their experiences and answered questions from their peers who hope to participate in next year’s competition. Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, Director and Pro Vice-Chancellor at Middlesex University Dubai then presented them with their participation awards, recognising the dedication of the team.

Maali Khadar of EMAC, one of the University’s Vis moot coaches and arbitrator at the moot, spoke regarding the importance of mooting. The interactive session sought student’s motivations for joining the recently established society and discussed opportunities for students to develop soft skills through extracurricular mooting, skills vital to their future careers. Maali also provided information on the forthcoming EMAC Moot 2018, to be hosted by Middlesex University Dubai in collaboration with EMAC this November.

Anna Fomina, Seridan Steiger, Natalie Jensen and Monika Humphreys-Davies of Ince & Co delivered workshops on the arbitral process and managing arbitration as a litigation lawyer, as well as a presentation on writing submissions, giving the mooting society members a valuable insight into the world of commercial arbitration and practical legal drafting.

We would like to thank all of our guest speakers for giving their valuable time and look forward to the next mooting society meeting!
