ABOUT THE EVENT

The British Computer Society, in collaboration with Middlesex University Dubai, is hosting their annual conference and exhibition on 24 and 27 October 2019.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Tolerance, Sustainability, and Women Empowerment’, aligned with the UAE’s national objectives for 2019.

We are pleased to invite abstracts for this student conference. In particular, we welcome abstracts with a focus on discussing, supporting, or challenging contemporary theory and practice through research evidence. We are seeking submissions across a range of subject areas, and/or submissions which signify pioneering applications and developments in the realm of, but not limited to, the themes of women empowerment, sustainability, and tolerance.

Short abstracts of 200-300 words can be submitted for consideration to either oral sessions (postgraduate students) or to poster or demo categories (undergraduate students). Oral presentations and poster sessions of this conference will examine current multidisciplinary trends in research and practice. Demo sessions will show innovative practice, and will propose novel solutions in various sectors using technology. Further details about these categories and information regarding the submission can be found here.

Abstracts should be submitted through this EasyChair link: https://easychair.org/conferences/? conf=2019bcsmdx.

General advice in preparing for the competition

Typically, demos, oral presentations, and scientific posters follow discipline-specific standards. However, these formats may vary between subject areas. Generally, the structure should follow four main parts:

- Introduction

- Methods

- Results

- Discussion

Oral presentation guidelines

Oral presentations should last for no more than seven minutes from beginning to end. Three minutes of Q&A will follow each presentation. Please ensure that you use MS PowerPoint and bring your presentation with you on a USB.

Demo presentation guidelines

Demo presentations should last for no more than twenty minutes from beginning to end. Ten minutes of Q&A will follow each demonstration. Please ensure that your presentation is on a USB and if you have a physical demonstration, please bring it along.

Poster presentation guidelines

You will not need to deliver an oral presentation nor present any PPT slides. Rather you will stand beside your poster and be asked to explain it, giving small groups of attendees and judges a description of your research. You are expected to prepare one A1 or A0 size poster that adheres to common scientific standards. You will be provided a display board and glue/tape to display your poster on the day of the conference. Typically, the creation of posters works well in MS-PowerPoint or similar programmes (there may be other options you may prefer) by defining single slides to your chosen size format (again, there are many resources available on the internet which may be helpful). Caution when using colours: In print, most colours appear darker than they are displayed on the computer screen which may impair readability. It might be preferable to lower colour saturation in your original slides. Hint: try to print your whole poster in A4 from a colour printer before printing the A1 or A0 poster.
