My Week of Welcome: The Start of an Unforgettable University Journey

During my first week of University, I had no idea what to expect. But as soon as Week of Welcome (WoW) kicked off, I was swept into a whirlwind of excitement. The campus buzzed with energy, and everywhere I turned, there was something fun to do. WoW gave us a taste of everything Middlesex (MDX) University Dubai had to offer, all packed into just a few thrilling days. Walking through the university, I was immediately struck by the variety of stalls lined up along the blocks, each representing different social and sports clubs. Every club had its own unique character, drawing us in with games and activities that showcased their energy and spirit. It was exciting to see which one would captivate me next.

Two clubs sparked my interest: the Culinary Club and the Events Club. Little did I know that this curiosity would eventually lead me to become the Culinary Club coordinator in my second year. The sense of limitless possibilities during WoW at MDX Dubai was inspiring. It felt like, with a little imagination and effort, anyone could become a part of next year’s Week of Welcome and inspire future students, just as I had been inspired. One of the most memorable moments was the crowd cheering for the dance and music clubs. The stalls were busy with activities—like the photography club’s challenge to guess whether a picture was taken with a camera or a phone, or the drama club quizzing us on famous movie lines. Even the book club had a game where we matched authors to their books. The sports clubs got in on the fun too, hosting challenges like rowing trials to scout potential new members.

The sponsors at WoW also made sure there was never a dull moment. We eagerly lined up for goodie bags and prizes, adding to the overall excitement. But it wasn’t just about the clubs; it was the friendships we made during those days that made the experience so memorable. Meeting new people during Week of Welcome at MDX Dubai was one of the highlights. Everyone was new, excited, and maybe a bit nervous, which made it the perfect time to bond with others in the same boat. The laughter, shared jokes, and easy-going vibes turned even the simplest moments into something special. WoW didn’t just introduce me to campus life; it set the tone for the rest of my year. The energy and excitement that filled those first few days gave me a true sense of belonging. It was as if the entire university was welcoming us, showing us all the opportunities, we could explore.

From joining clubs to participating in different activities, WoW was the starting point for friendships and experiences that would shape my college journey. Now, as I prepare to enter my third year, it hits me that September 2024 will mark my final Week of Welcome. It’s a bittersweet realisation. On one hand, I’m excited for the new students to have their own WoW experience, just as I did at MDX Dubai. But on the other hand, it’s sad knowing this will be my last chance to be part of such an energetic, communal celebration. Still, I plan to savour every moment of this final WoW. I want to take in the excitement one more time, meet new faces, and celebrate everything that Middlesex University Dubai has meant to me over the past three years. This last WoW is a full-circle moment—a chance to reflect on how far I’ve come and to celebrate the memories I’ve made, the friends I’ve found, and the person I’ve become along the way. Since my first WoW, I already felt like I had a place to call home. #Middlesex University Dubai
