Shaping the future of tech: MDX Lens X The Computing Society
- Friday, 3 January 2025
In November 2024, the Computing Society at MDX Dubai joined with seven other student societies under the MDX Leadership and Engagement Network for Students (LENS) platform, an initiative designed to expand each society’s reach, foster collaboration, and strengthen the support on offer to fellow students.
We asked Muhammad Bilal, President of the Computing Society, to share his thoughts on the society and how MDX Lens is making a difference:
I'm in my final year studying Computer Systems Engineering at MDX Dubai and I wanted to take a moment to share my experience with the MDX Computing Society and how being a part of it has shaped my journey at university.
When I first joined the Computing Society, it was toward the end of my first year, right as the society was being revived after COVID. I’d heard about it from the previous president, who introduced me to the society’s mission, the idea of creating a collaborative and innovative space centred around technology really caught my attention. It was a community where students could come together, learn from each other, and grow in their understanding of tech, and that was exactly the kind of environment I was looking for.
I also wanted to contribute and help others develop their skills, so I decided to take on the role of a mentor early on. It was a fantastic opportunity to support my peers, guide them through challenges, and feel like I was making a real impact; it gave me a sense of purpose within the society, and strengthened my desire to stay involved.
Fast forward to today, and I’m honoured to be the President of the MDX Computing Society. The experience has been incredibly rewarding, both personally and professionally, opening up countless opportunities for me to build a network of like-minded peers, mentors, and even industry professionals. I’ve gained practical skills and insights into emerging technologies and industry trends, but perhaps more importantly, being part of this society has given me the confidence to push my boundaries, collaborate with others, and take on new challenges.
The best part is that the Computing Society is welcoming to everyone. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced tech enthusiast, there’s a place for you here. We’re a diverse group, and we believe that anyone with an interest in technology -whether they’re from a technical background or not, can benefit from an inclusive and supportive space where all students can learn, innovate, and grow together.
I’m really excited about our involvement with MDX LENS. Being part of the initiative will allow the Computing Society to grow even more through cross-disciplinary collaboration with other societies. It’s an amazing opportunity to bring fresh ideas into our projects and events while also helping our members develop additional skills by attending events hosted by other societies. LENS also promotes diversity and inclusivity, which aligns perfectly with our society’s values, I’m excited about the potential for collaboration, streamlined communication, and more opportunities to engage with a wider range of students.
So, if you’re curious about what’s coming up next, stay tuned! We’ve got a lot planned - workshops, hackathons, guest speakers, field trips, exhibitions, community projects, and much more. Whether you’re looking to learn new skills, network with industry experts, or just have some fun with technology, there’s something for everyone.
