A Journey of Discovery: My Unforgettable Trip to Japan at Middlesex University Dubai
- Tuesday, 11 June 2024
In May 2024, the MDX Student Activities team organised an optional student trip around Japan, stopping in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Students who signed up for the trip were in for a treat, with each city having its own attractions, surprises and delicious cuisines to sample.
We asked one of the lucky travellers to document their journey to Japan with the MDX Student Activities Team:
Hey there! I'm Suzane Mathews, currently a third-year student pursuing a BSc Honours in Psychology with Counselling Skills. As I reflect on my recent journey to Japan, I can't help but feel overwhelmingly energised at the incredible experiences I have had. What started as a celebration of my upcoming graduation turned into a transformative adventure filled with cultural immersion, newfound friendships, and invaluable life-lessons.
Arriving in Japan
From the moment I set foot in Japan, my expectations were surpassed at every turn. My primary goal was to embrace the opportunity to start afresh, connect with locals, and delve into the rich tapestry of Japanese culture. Little did I know that the journey ahead would be so enriching. Every local hotel stay began with a drop-in at the local convenience stores- to slurp on some instant noodles and this will forever be my favourite memory with my roommate Sheraly.
Public transport
Navigating the bustling streets of Japan was made easier thanks to the efficient public transportation system, complete with English signage. Even when faced with challenges, like ‘almost’ getting lost in Ginza, the kindness of strangers prevailed. A chance encounter with a police officer, facilitated by the simple phrase "semimasen”- meaning excuse me, led to a memorable adventure reminiscent of a real-life exploration, as though I was a living Dora the Explorer with a map in my hand.
Japanese customs and traditions
One of the most enlightening aspects of my trip was learning about Japanese customs and traditions from our tour guides. I was fascinated to discover the meticulous cleanliness of the city and the importance of personal responsibility, such as carrying waste bags for trash disposal. The etiquette of removing shoes before entering rooms, including fitting rooms, was particularly intriguing, highlighting their deep respect for cleanliness and personal space.
Culinary explorations
Exploring the culinary landscape was another major highlight of my trip. From the bustling streets of Dotonbori in Osaka (with Tejas, Irshad, Reethu and Raagha) to the tranquil tea houses in Kyoto, each meal was a sensory delight. I savoured every bite of the traditional dishes, including the savoury sushi and unexpected delights like potato salad sushi. Embracing the locals' customs, such as slurping noodles to express satisfaction, added an extra layer of appreciation to the dining experience.
Immersive experiences and special moments
The cultural immersion didn't end with food—it extended to immersive experiences like the Team Lab Planets exhibition. Walking barefoot through ethereal landscapes filled with digital art was a mesmerising journey that evoked a profound sense of tranquillity. Perhaps the most cherished moments were the unexpected encounters with locals being invited to a storytelling session at Nishiki Market by a local comedian remains a favourite highlight of my trip. The warmth and generosity of the Japanese people left a lasting impression, reinforcing the importance of cultural exchange and connection.
Lessons learnt
Above all, my trip to Japan taught me invaluable lessons about punctuality and respect for cultural norms that were practiced throughout the trip. The emphasis on being punctual as a sign of respect for others resonated deeply with me. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member of staff of the Student Activities team for giving us an enlightening experience and urging us to explore the city on our own.
To new friendships that came from trying the varieties of food at the convenience stores to shopping at Donki, thank you MDX Dubai, this was by far the best way to say goodbye to my undergraduate life. As I bid farewell to Japan, I carry with me not only memories of breathtaking landscapes and delectable cuisine, but also a newfound appreciation for the beauty of cultural exchange. My journey may have begun as a celebration of graduation, but it has culminated into a transformative odyssey of self-discovery and connection.
Arigato gozaimasu, Japan, for an unforgettable experience.
