Monica Manyanga is a hearing-impaired student currently studying BSc Honours Information Technology at Middlesex University Dubai. Monica, like many other deaf students, faces unique challenges when it comes to studying at a university and it’s important to identify and support their journey through university life. We asked Monica for her perspective on her student experience so far, and how she has overcome any barriers she has faced along the way:

My name is Monica Manyanga. I’m deaf, and I have been studying BSc Honours Information Technology at Middlesex University for three years, plus one year on the International Foundation Programme

My experience

As a deaf student at university, my experience can be different from that of hearing students. Communication can be harder, especially in fast-paced situations like lectures or group talks. I rely more on visuals and writing to understand things. Sometimes, I need extra help or planning for certain activities. However, with support from the University and my classmates, I still enjoy my time at university and succeed in my studies.

One lecturer always gave me lecture slides before class and made sure to face me when speaking. My classmates are also very supportive. During group projects, they speak clearly and sometimes use text messaging to include me in discussions. Their support and understanding have made my university experience much better.

Resources and facilities

Middlesex University Dubai has been very supportive of my needs as a deaf student. They provide Frequency Modulated (FM) systems and hearing loops in lecture halls to help me hear better. Live captioning and transcription services let me follow along and review lectures later. The University also allows me to bring in sign language interpreters for some classes and events, which is very helpful. They ensure I get lecture notes and slides in advance to prepare for classes. The disability support team gives me personalised assistance, and there are quiet study areas with the necessary technology where I can focus on my studies. These resources have greatly helped my academic success and experience at Middlesex University Dubai.

Student club experiences

I am facilitating the LCE American Sign Language (ASL) programme for students and staff. It's been a great experience to share my passion for ASL and improve communication within our community. Some memorable moments include watching students become more confident in their ASL skills and seeing staff members use the language to create an inclusive environment. I'm excited to expand this programme to all three campuses (Dubai, London and Mauritius) next year so more people can benefit from learning and using ASL.

Group projects and extracurricular activities

Participating in group projects and campus activities has been good for me. My classmates are helpful and talk clearly so I can understand. Sometimes, we use texts or writing to ensure I catch everything and provide support when needed. With everyone's help, I can enjoy these activities without any problems.

Internship at MDX

I recently completed an internship at Middlesex University Dubai, where I worked as an Admissions Counsellor. My main responsibilities involved performing administrative tasks, such as data input and handling student application information.

I faced several communication challenges during my internship. I used speech-to-text apps to manage these challenges, and my colleague, who learned sign language, helped me interpret. I also relied on written communication to ensure everything was clear and understood. These tools and strategies were essential in helping me perform my tasks effectively and stay engaged in all activities.

My interactions with colleagues and supervisors were wonderful during my internship. They were very supportive and understanding of my needs. They provided written instructions and confirmed that I understood all conversations. Their encouragement and flexibility created an inclusive and welcoming environment, making my internship at Middlesex University Dubai a truly enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Student support provided by the Centre for Academic Success.

The Centre for Academic Success (CAS) at Middlesex University Dubai has been a big help for me. They offer extra time for exams, which lets me show what I know without feeling rushed. Their study skills workshops have made me better at managing my time and staying organised. Plus, they provide note-taking help and assistive technologies like screen readers, which have been useful for my learning. Overall, CAS has greatly impacted my university experience.

Hobbies and aspirations

Outside of my academic and club activities, I enjoy virtual reality (VR) and exploring its different uses. I also like attending workshops on robotics to learn about new developments and improve my skills. These hobbies help me relax and stay engaged with the latest technology.
I'm still exploring my options, but I’m interested in pursuing a robotics and software development career. I'm excited about the potential to work in these fields and apply the skills I've been developing during my studies.

Personal goals for the next few years

I want to get better at robotics and software development. I might take some advanced courses or do internships to learn more. I also want to work on projects that help people. Outside of work, I want to balance my job and hobbies well. Teaching sign language is something I'm interested in as well.
