A passion for the Big Screen and support from her lecturers helped Middlesex Dubai graduate Lakshmi Sathish pursue her dreams of working in film and become an internationally recognised director and screenwriter

An award-winning film director and screenwriter has her sights set on the Big Screen - and recalls how she would never have pursued her passion had it not been for the encouragement of her lecturers at Middlesex University Dubai.

Class of 2018 BA Honours Film alumna Lakshmi Sathish, born and raised in Dubai, has received widespread acclaim for her short film ‘Hers Truly’ - about the relationship between a stepmother and daughter - and she has gone on to win awards at film festivals around the world. At the Emirates Short Film Festival 2019, ‘Hers Truly’ received six nominations and won in three major categories: Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Film.

The 22-year-old is now balancing her time between a Master’s in Film at Middlesex University London whilst writing the script for what she hopes will become her debut feature-length film.

But, says Lakshmi, her dreams almost didn’t become a reality.

After choosing to study at Middlesex University Dubai, which was her chance to see “a multicultural view of the world” after spending all of her previous education within Indian schools - Lakshmi originally chose to do a BA in Journalism.

Despite having a passion for movies, she had, after conversations with relatives, decided instead to pursue a journalism career. It was three weeks into her course, during a module in Media Production, that a lecturer noticed that Lakshmi’s passion lay in film and scriptwriting.

Encouragement by her lecturers led Lakshmi to have the courage to have an honest conversation with her family about her true passion - and, following a seamless transition to the University’s esteemed BA Film course, Lakshmi was back on the right track.

“Sitting in my first film class, I knew I had finally found my calling,” she recalled. “While from a young age I have always been into writing, this passion led me to write about films. I thought, ‘how can I write about films if I do not know the craft?’. It led me to do my research and I found screenwriting really excited me.”

After her switchover, Lakshmi said she relished being in a multicultural class with supportive lecturers.

“In my BA Class I was the only Indian - and this was really refreshing to me,” she says. “Growing up I had only interacted with other Indians my whole life and been to Indian schools being around so many different nationalities was a fresh learning experience, that, to this day, I still cherish. The teaching experience is completely immersive and students are able to work on real world projects and receive significant industry exposure.

“The teachers were all so committed to their craft. It meant it was so much more than just a teacher-student relationship. These lecturers were people I could look up to and they all made my time at Middlesex University Dubai the most memorable experience of my life.

“I am still in contact with all my teachers two years on and I can truly say I built bonds for life.”

It was during her final year at university that Lakshmi made her short film ‘Hers Truly’ as part of her dissertation. The short film was chosen to be the winner of Middlesex University Dubai’s Senior Showcase - leading to her film being shown on the big screen at Roxy Cinemas. This propelled the film into further international recognition, with ‘Hers Truly’ receiving nominations at seven film festivals worldwide, with Lakshmi also being flown out to showcase at the Hong Kong Film Festival on a special grant of $8,000.

“It was a wonderful journey,” recalls Lakshmi. Her instant stardom meant Lakshmi, upon graduating, secured an internship with renowned Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer Mani Ratnam.

“That was my very first experience working on set. It was brilliant; my course at Middlesex University Dubai had really prepared me for it, but it was also on a larger scale than anything I had done before and there were a lot of people involved. Despite the challenges, I performed well and was very happy with the way I could support the crew.”

Lakshmi also wanted to give back to the university that had shown her so much support and for six months she worked at the Dubai campus as a young lecturer teaching Digital Production.

But once again, says Lakshmi, the University supported her development by awarding her a scholarship to study a Master’s in Film at Middlesex University London.

Whilst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has meant she has returned home to Dubai, the university’s distance learning programme means Lakshmi is able to complete her Master’s while being safe with her family and juggling a job for a London architectural firm with whom she creates short videos and content. Lakshmi already has her final dissertation in mind.

“I want to write scripts and direct a feature-length film. I am keeping it under wraps right now - but it will be a very personal story. Who knows where it will go, but I keep my fingers crossed.”

Until then, Lakshmi has a thank you for her former lecturers.

“I treasure my time at Middlesex University Dubai. These lecturers are people who will help you for life. By the time I graduated the people and faculty I met were like family.

“Choosing Middlesex University Dubai was the best decision I ever made.”

Middlesex University Dubai goes from strength to strength and has rounded off a stellar academic year of achievements for students, faculty and staff by being awarded a 5 Star rating in the 2020 KHDA Higher Education Classification developed in partnership with QS™.

CIE works to transform the mindsets of business experts and governmental managers by developing customised learning programmes tailored to the specific needs of an organisation.

Furthermore, amidst the global pandemic, Middlesex University Dubai showed its ability to foster flexibility, innovation and community spirit in times of global uncertainty as it exercised a seamless transition to online learning by providing creative teaching solutions through its virtual classrooms and other modern technology platforms to minimise educational disruptions.

Middlesex University Dubai carefully crafted a home learning strategy to ensure all students would continue receiving high-quality education and support during this period where education systems across the world are redefining the way curriculums are delivered to pupils.

The switchover to online academic delivery was both seamless and resounding success.

The KHDA rating is the latest mark of excellence, with Middlesex University Dubai scoring five stars across Employability, Internationalisation, Research, Facilities, Happiness and Wellbeing, and Inclusiveness.

The KHDA rating system applies to international universities in Dubai and benchmarks their performance across a range of indicators, such as quality of teaching and research, learning environments, creativity and social responsibility.

KHDA inspectors awarded Middlesex University Dubai - which first opened its doors in 2005 - the highest rating of 5-stars - granted only to universities which offer a world-class standard of education and have demonstrated strengths across all categories.

To meet the five-star grade, universities must demonstrate a global reputation, highly regarded international research and teaching standards, and graduates who are sought after by employers, among others.

In its latest ranking, KDHA inspectors particularly commended the internationalisation of Middlesex University Dubai. With a growing need for higher education institutions to cultivate a global outlook to offer students the best possible preparation for life and careers in the 21st century, KHDA inspectors highlighted the importance of institutions to develop and articulate their own campus-based internationalisation strategy to meet the expectations of students who increasingly want international experiences while pursuing their university studies.

The KHDA awarded Middlesex University Dubai full marks across a number of sub-sectors, including international collaboration, international student support services, international faculty, international exchange programmes and international diversity.

The university also received 50/50 marks for happiness and wellbeing of both the 3,500+strong student body and the 150+ members of faculty, highlighting the wellbeing activities and voluntary activities it has on offer to boost happiness and morale across the University. The state-of-the-art facilities at Middlesex University Dubai were awarded 99 out of the available 100 points, with particular commendation for the University sports facilities, student accommodation, student clubs and library resources. Topically, the health, safety and environmental factors of the University were also awarded the highest possible rating.

Middlesex University Dubai also received full marks across the research category - which enables higher education institutions to demonstrate their research assets such as research quality and productivity. It scored top in the number of papers per faculty submitted, in addition to funds dedicated to research and development support.

The university was also praised across a myriad of other sectors, including the career service support it offers to students and graduates during and post-degree, graduate employment rate and student satisfaction.

Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Middlesex University Dubai, welcomed the rating, saying: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank every faculty member, every student and every member of the Middlesex University Dubai family who has helped make the 2019/2020 academic year one of our most successful to date.

“The KHDA is a hallmark for quality education in Dubai, so we are delighted that Middlesex University Dubai was awarded five stars. We pride ourselves on being a highly ranked university not just in the UAE, but regionally and globally. It was, therefore, particularly pleasing to see the recognition Middlesex University Dubai was awarded for its internationalism, and for our world-class facilities that attract students from across the globe to our university every year.

“With this latest Higher Education Classification (HEC), we hope to give students and their parents the confidence of choosing Middlesex University Dubai as the international institution of choice, one which has proven itself time-and-time as a world-class university that helps prepare and propel graduates onto their preferred career paths.”

Dr Fernandes said the success of Middlesex University Dubai in the past 12 months will be the benchmark for future achievements

“2020 has both been the dawn of a new decade - and a year which has seen unprecedented times - not only in the world of academia but for the wider world at large.

“However, this phase will pass. Opportunities will return. Our world will emerge stronger than before. This is already the case at Middlesex University Dubai, which has been going from strength-to-strength, with a record expected year of admissions and an expanded portfolio of programmes available in the autumn.

“We look forward to continuing to build the highest level of excellence as we get ready for a new year of preparing graduates to leave their mark on the world.’

The opportunity to do something you loved during childhood doesn't always become reality, but for Middlesex Dubai graduate Laureen Fredah, her dream of becoming a lawyer has materialised after passing the New York Bar Exam and being accepted to the New York State Bar

A law graduate has said the opportunities, mentorship and support provided during her studies at Middlesex University Dubai have helped her achieve a life-long dream of being accepted to the New York State Bar.

Laureen Fredah, who graduated with the first cohort of the University's LLB programme in 2017, said she had always hoped to pursue a career in the legal profession.

“I knew I wanted to be a lawyer as far as I can remember. As a young child, I was always advocating for one thing or the other,” she explained.

While her initial studies led her to instead begin a career working in the aviation industry as cabin crew for the UAE airline Emirates, Laureen still dreamt of pursuing her initial passion of becoming a lawyer and began researching ways she could juggle her job while studying for a future in the legal profession.

“I have always wanted to study Law and at exactly the time when Middlesex University Dubai launched its Law Programme, I had decided to finally enrol for an LLB (a three-year UK qualifying Bachelor of Law degree). The options that were available in the region at the time were all online courses, which is still the case. These were not ideal as I wanted a full-time, face-to-face kind of experience.

“Working and living in Dubai, I needed to get the kind of education I knew would be perfect for me right here in Dubai. MDX Dubai happened to be the only University that was offering exactly what I needed, an English common law degree with full-time study. It was perfect.”

This meant Laureen could finally realise the dreams she had harboured from childhood.

“I have wanted this since I was a little girl and even when life did not go as straight as I had planned, I always wanted to come back to my first love - the legal profession.”

Combining full-time studies alongside her career with the UAE airline was demanding, says Laureen, but was aided by hard work, determination - and the support of the University’s faculty.

“It was challenging just like anything else juggled with work," she said. “The only motivation was how much I have wanted this and how far I had come to finally pursue it.

“I had worked hard at getting my Law degree - and not even work would stand in my way. I planned, used my leave days at work for the exam period, used my off days for lectures, put in extra work on the weekends so as to accumulate some days in the week for lectures; my whole life rotated around manoeuvring work and school.

“This was not easy but it was all worth it. Most importantly, my lecturers were very supportive. They gave me constructive feedback, entertained my questions, provided out of class explanations and were always available and ready to be of any assistance. They were the best support structure throughout my three years.”

The three years of support and hard work finally paid off in 2017, when Laureen, alongside 34 others, all of them students of the first LLB cohort at Middlesex University Dubai, graduated with a Law degree. With her LLB from Middlesex University Dubai, she was able to study for and sit the New York Bar Exam which she successfully passed and was then admitted to the New York State Board of Law in 2019. She is now allowed to practice as a fully qualified lawyer in the State of New York in the United States.

“Graduation and being admitted to the Bar is just the beginning of a new chapter in my life,” explained Laureen. “I am looking forward to finally start reaping the rewards from all the hard work.

“It is a period to start looking for legal opportunities and finally putting all the theory into practice.”

Laureen said she could not have realised her dream without the encouragement of her Law lecturers; and said - even post-graduation - the support system at Middlesex University Dubai continues to help her today.

"I am grateful that even after graduation, MDX is still supportive of all our next endeavours; be it job searching or assistance in furthering our education, the University is continuous of assistance and ready to help.”

Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Middlesex University Dubai congratulated Laureen and  said: “Laureen is a shining example of how dreams, determination and diligence can lead to success. It is  a testament to the years of hard work invested by her and is a shining example of combining an excellent academic degree at Middlesex University Dubai with a top class Professional qualification ”.

Middlesex University Dubai has staged a series of initiatives to support both faculty and students during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak

Community campaigns, mental health panel discussions and virtual fitness and music activities among pro-active measures to foster school spirit and boost wellbeing

An e-learning strategy was also successfully implemented to ensure all students continue receiving a high-quality education and support during remote learning phase

Dubai, UAE, May 5th, 2020: As the COVID-19 pandemic continues affecting communities, businesses and economies worldwide, Middlesex University Dubai is helping ensure the continuity of its educational mission by using innovative teaching solutions, team spirit and innovation to boost the learning and wellbeing of its faculty, staff and student body.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, conveyed to the UAE people on the first day of implementing the distance learning system across the UAE private and public schools: "Never stop learning. Education shapes life and whoever stops learning, stops living." Given the outstanding technological infrastructure for smart learning in the UAE, Middlesex University Dubai transitioned quickly to online learning by providing innovative teaching solutions through its virtual classrooms and other modern technological platforms to minimise educational disruptions.

Middlesex University Dubai carefully crafted a home learning strategy to ensure all students would continue receiving a high-quality education and support during this period where education systems across the world are redefining the way curriculums are delivered to pupils.

The switchover to online academic delivery was both seamless and a resounding success.

A Distance Learning Task Force and a highly skilled IT department swiftly introduced a distance learning platform which more than 150 staff have been trained to use. Furthermore, study plan templates were readily constructed and put into action - helping ensure lecturers provided students with detailed lesson plans well ahead of time.

Of course, the key to the success of any initiative is in its implementation and this is where the university's faculty excelled.

In the first four weeks of the distance learning programme, the University recorded that - on just one platform (GoToMeeting) - there were 4,000+ live sessions conducted with 53,000+ instances of students joining. In addition to the GoToMeeting platform, lecturers are also using other platforms such as Kaltura, Zoom, Adobe Connect and others. Live lecturers are supported by one on one consultation with lecturers and the learning support departments the Centre for Academic Studies (CAS) and the Library.

All the student support departments, Student Office, Visas, Finance, Careers and Employability are fully functional virtually. Marketing and Admissions departments are working online to facilitate recruitment of new students for the September 2020 Intake.

Middlesex University Dubai was also quick to recognise that - for staff, faculty and students - coming to grips with COVID-19 was not only a physical shift away from a classroom setting - but a mental strain.

It led to the University hosting a special panel discussion on COVID-19 and the mental health impact the outbreak could have on the student body.

In the first virtual ‘Health Out Loud X Re:Set Dialogues: Student Life during COVID-19’, panellists discussed the effects of the pandemic on students and their wellbeing and were on hand to answer questions from an online audience who faced both confusion and concern about what the 2020/21 academic year holds for them.

As Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Middlesex University Dubai, said: “Many students are caught in the web of COVID-19 confusion. Knowledge and preparation can help reduce feelings of panic and we hope that this webinar - the first of many - will go towards diminishing the understandable fears and worries the student body may be facing.” Dr Fernandes message to all students and staff is to stay strong and that “We are One World, One Family and Together the World will get through this”.

In any crisis, knowledge is power. Staying informed is the most important thing the population can do to protect itself against any threat.

Amidst a global crisis that continues to impact lives in unprecedented ways, special editions of the Wednesday Research Seminar Series - which was launched in 2008 and has featured more than 275 presentations to date - tackled the subject on everyone’s thoughts.

On 15 April, Dr Sreejith Balasubramanian hosted a seminar titled “Sustaining Education through COVID-19 Pandemic – Learning from the Past Crisis”. The seminar explored the importance of educational institutions regularly reviewing the changing situation, enhancing their preparedness, and how they should develop effective long term strategies.

Professor Ajit Karnik also delivered a seminar on “Statistical Analysis of COVID-19 Data”, which addressed the statistical properties of the virus, information on total and new confirmed cases, total and new deaths due to the virus and recoveries from the virus. The presentation also investigated the likely factors that explain the progress of the disease across countries.

In times of confusion and unprecedented circumstances, fostering innovation and a community spirit was also recognised as a necessity; helping continue constant communication is critical in ensuring consistency and positivity among staff, faculty and students.

It led to the staff and student body sharing their messages of positivity, gratitude and solidarity with all those frontline workers who are working tirelessly to keep us safe by participating in the Together We Can appreciation video. It highlighted the important message of ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe, Stay Connected’.

The students marked the dedication of healthcare and frontline professionals by recording heartfelt messages of thanks for those working to protect the safety of the nation - and the wider world.

The campaign was not only a way to express communal gratitude - but also a chance to connect with the school community.

It led to a string of other initiatives from the University's Student Activities Department to ensure - despite a shift away from campus - school spirit remained strong.

A special edition of Music Monday’s (live music from the University’s Music Club), workouts with Coach Sasa – live sessions along with videos posted to the @wearemdx (Student Activities) Instagram page, and Learn the Dance with Dance Club; ensured that bodies - as well as minds - were kept active; and a sense of school community remained.

In times of crisis, continuity and consistency are some of the most important factors in beating fears over uncertainty.

Dr Fernandes said that the health and wellbeing of the students and staff remain his top priority.

“These are uncertain times - times in which the University has been proud to see  students, faculty and staff flourish in periods of change to the educational delivery. Our thanks to the UAE Authorities for ensuring a safe and secure environment and for providing the technological infrastructure.

“We are grateful to the Healthcare professionals, essential workers and Government officials on the frontlines of this battle. They have shown professionalism, dedication, compassion and commitment which is testament to the community spirit in the UAE.

“We understand the stress and anxiety all our university community may have during these uncertain times, especially for those who are away from our family and loved ones.

While our utmost priority - as it has always been - is the continued educational excellence, wellbeing and happiness of all our students, it has also been a necessity to ensure everyone in the University network and community keeps up the good spirits - alongside the outstanding work.

The University has launched an initiative not only to reduce but to recycle 100% of PET Plastics

Middlesex University Dubai is the first University in the UAE to be part of a sustainable system for recycling 'waste' back into everyday products, such as clothing and accessories. The University is partnering with #SimplyBottles, a programme that recycles PET plastic and reduces plastic pollution.

The initiative, launched by the Institute of Sustainable Development (ISD) at Middlesex University Dubai, will encourage its staff and students to increase the recycling of plastic water bottles in the UAE, increase environmental sustainability practices through behavioural change and eliminate the use of Single Use Plastic (SUP) on campus.

“As a University we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and to promoting the importance of sustainability. Our ambition is to become a leader in environmental friendly practices in the UAE - in line with the country’s National Agenda for 2021” emphasised Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Middlesex University Dubai. “

Over 150 students are actively involved in helping drive the awareness of the closed loop recycling initiative, which will culminate in a week of sustainability activities in October. “It is vital to engage the student body to educate, participate and inspire others to recycle, to contribute to the 2021 UAE vision to divert 75% of all waste from landfill” said Andrew Mackenzie, Marketing Lecturer, Business School and Environmental Lead of the Institute of Sustainable Development.

Currently less than 6% of plastic is recycled in the UAE – Middlesex’s goal is to significantly increase recycling rates, helping to drive a circular economy and reduce plastic pollution in the UAE.

Equipping students, staff and faculty with reusable water bottles and reusable cups, providing water dispensers and easy to use recycling stations across campus and driving active recycling habits, are just some of the steps the University are taking to promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The students are raising awareness of the importance of clean, green living and the small ways in which individuals can make a significant difference to protecting the planet.

When commercial artist Richard Sifkitz finally gets around to having that physical he'd been putting off for years, and his cholesterol comes back dangerously high, he buys a stationary bike, and vows to ride it regularly. A riveting riff on artistic frustration, midlife mortality, and hard-won redemption, Stationary Bike is a thrill ride that could come only from the mind of Stephen King.

Speaking about the achievement, Dr David Tully, Head of the Film and Media Department at Middlesex University Dubai said, “It is an honour and an amazing opportunity for our students to adapt the work of the world-famous author. This is not only exciting from the University’s perspective, but it’s also exciting news for the region. Especially with the growing attention towards regional filmmakers.”

As per the ‘Dollar Baby’ contract, students may use the rights to adapt the short story but cannot use it for commercial purposes. They can, however, submit their work for awards and recognitions across film festivals that do not hold any monetary value.

Mr Afroz Nawaf, Film Lecturer at Middlesex University Dubai, said, “At Middlesex University Dubai, we take classic classroom experience and turn them into a practice unlike any, with real-world project integration, strategic and corporate partners. We strive to provide an all-round education that goes beyond theory to practicality, helping students develop their knowledge and skills for future success.”

Students across year 1, year 2 and year 3 will be participating in this project, which will be conducted between December to April 2019 with the final DVD of the short film being shared with Stephen King. This project will be completed under the guidance of the lecturers from the Film and Media Department, and Middlesex University Dubai’s alumni members will also offer their expertise as consultants to render this project into a huge success.

King previously granted the rights for “The Woman in the Room” to writer and director Frank Darabont for a 1983 short film. Darabont went on to write and direct the critically acclaimed 1994 drama “The Shawshank Redemption,” also a King adaptation, and co-create the wildly successful AMC horror show “The Walking Dead.”

The adaptation of Stationary Bike will be completed in-house at the University’s state of the art facility, MDX Studios which features industry standard editing suites that includes Colour Grading suites, Editing and VFX suites, ADR Booth, 4K Editing facilities and a newly designed integrated learning space that also includes a screening room. MDX Studios is currently the only film university in the Middle East Region to be certified by Blackmagic Design.

As part of an ongoing collaboration with Roxy Cinemas, the final thesis projects of year 3 students along with the final presentation of the short film based on the short story by Stephen King, Stationary Bike will be showcased in cinema during a private screening.

Previously, Middlesex University Dubai Film students have won awards across the world at Film Festivals and various competitions including 5+ awards at 48HFP (DIFF) 2017 with student Lakshmi Sateesh currently in the running for Global recognition for her film ‘Hers Truly’ with an Official Nomination at the Global University Film Awards 2018, Hong Kong.

Middlesex University Dubai, a leading university of choice in the region and DIFC Academy of Law (AOL), the premier entity providing quality ancillary services to the UAE legal community, announces a partnership offering a first of its kind certificate course in Common Law and DIFC Courts Practice.

Through the collaboration, both institutions aim to prepare Emirati advocates and other civil law trained lawyers to practice before the DIFC Courts. Beginning in September 2018, the 28 weeks course will be held both at DIFC’s Academy of Law campus and Middlesex University Dubai training facilities. Entry requirements for the course include personal interviews and IELTS level of 5.5 or the equivalent. The course will be taught by expert legal faculty from the University as well as subject matter specialists from the Academy of Law and renowned barristers from Outer Temple Chambers.

Speaking about the collaboration, David Gallo, Director, DIFC Academy of Law, said: “We are delighted to offer this unique legal education experience, designed to equip legal professionals with the tools required to structure commercial transactions and resolve disputes in a common law environment."

“Trans-systemic professional competencies are not only essential for working effectively in an increasingly complex legal ethos, but they also provide lawyers with the differentiated knowledge and skills that international law firms and multinational clients are seeking. Providing this opportunity for Emirati Advocates, other lawyers with civil law backgrounds and legal professionals interested in DIFC laws and practice is another important step in the evolution of a legal ecosystem comprised of multiple separate but interdependent jurisdictions, where legal professionals can operate in the spirit of cooperation to drive cross-system legal service efficiencies.  We can imagine an emerging model of legal education - with global marquee value - that enables practitioners to serve the needs of clients in a fast-moving commercial environment that increasingly requires less restrictive jurisdictional and regulatory boundaries."

The certificate course will cover all aspects of commercial law, DIFC Laws & Procedures and Advanced Advocacy. On completion, students will understand the operation of the legal system of England and Wales; demonstrate knowledge in key common law areas like contract, tort, land, arbitration and employment law; and, recognise the specific nuances of various DIFC statutes including insolvency, land, trust, foundations and other laws. Students also will gain a working understanding of DIFC Courts rules and procedures, along with the practical skills required for practitioners to effectively litigate cases and advocate the interests of their clients.

On the partnership with DIFC Academy of Law, Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, Director and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University Dubai, said: “We are delighted to partner with the DIFC Academy of Law in delivering an excellent learning experience to Emirati lawyers and other civil law practitioners. This announcement is in line with our continuous commitment to providing bespoke training and learning opportunities to students with real-world applications. We currently offer five undergraduate and four postgraduate programmes, and with the addition of the certificate course in Common Law and DIFC Courts Practice, we hope to strengthen further our legal offerings.”
