What will you study on the BA Journalism and Communication?

You will be learning technical skills in journalism technologies, and shooting and editing news packages from the very start of your degree. You will progress through the modules ensuring you can produce and tell stories across platforms. You will develop key journalistic skills such as finding and gathering news, engaging wider and diverse audiences, and writing neat and accurate copy. You will be able to analyse, deliberate and write effectively, whether for essays and constructing arguments, or online for a specific news audience.

What will you gain?

You will gain knowledge in the wider communications field, covering how campaigns are used by media and affect society and how politics can influence news. You will learn how to work independently and as part of a team to produce stories. You will know how to work effectively in a variety of roles in a newsroom, whether you are presenting, writing or editing news material.

NOTE: Not all optional modules may be available each year, as they are dependent upon student interest and minimum numbers of registrations.

Note: Both core and optional modules are constantly updated and under review. As with most academic programmes, please remember that it is possible that a module may not be offered in any particular year, for instance because too few students opt for it. Middlesex University reserves the right to vary or withdraw any course or module.

  • Year 1

    • Journalism Skills (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      The module will instil and develop journalism practice inside and outside of the classroom. You will be introduced to news ‘beats’ or areas and encouraged to follow events in your assigned ‘beat’. You will learn the responsibilities of journalists working in newsrooms, news teams and independently.

    • What is Journalism? (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      The news media industry changes and develops at a rapid speed. This is not just the case recently, but historically too. This module discusses these issues, along with the changing practice of journalism and the role of the journalist in society and democracy at large.

    • Campaign Communication (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      This module will introduce the various forms and theories of communication that are involved in campaigns that use media. This will involve analysis of historical and current examples of campaigns from a number of perspectives from the perspective of the news industry that cover and promote certain campaigns, as well as perspectives from politics, the public sector, charitable and for-profit corporations.

    • Information, Power, and People (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      The module aims to give you a basic understanding of the contemporary social and political environment, and your position as a journalist in society. Using the framework offered by regulatory bodies and both national and international legal institutions, you will critically explore the ever-changing environment in which journalists operate.

  • Year 2

    • Multimodal Journalism (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      You will develop your abilities in relevant genres of writing by sourcing, producing and editing original stories. You will also advance your skills in journalistic research, interviewing and storytelling. You will apply these abilities to news gathering and distribution in print, broadcast, online, mobile and emergent technologies across multiple platforms, with opportunities to specialise as appropriate.

    • Investigative Techniques (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      This module is designed to train you in the development of research/investigative skills critical to the journalism and communications industry. As such, it introduces the key research techniques and methods central to academic and professional practice within and across the industry.

    • Arts, Lifestyle and Sports Journalism (30 Credits) - Optional

      This module covers journalism about fine art, contemporary art and mass and popular culture including painting, music, photography, literature, cinema, travel, celebrity culture and sports. You will have the opportunity to develop your own specialist area of interest and a specialist writing portfolio.

    • Broadcast Journalism (30 Credits) - Optional

      This module will develop your skills in an advanced broadcast journalism (audio and TV) setting through continuous weekly practice and feedback. You will practise your broadcast news gathering skills (journalistic and technical) through Newsday practice. In addition, the you will be required to reflect upon practice through regular debriefs and constructive criticism.

    • Political Communication (30 Credits) - Optional

      This module will provide you with the ability to assess the role and function of communication in the public sphere and to evaluate the management and practice of communication within the political process. Practices of all three main political communication actors will be discussed and analysed (media, political actors and audiences/citizens) as well as the debates surrounding them.

  • Year 3

    • Entrepreneurship (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      This module will be an opportunity for you to engage with realistic scenarios you are likely to encounter in one or more periods during any career in the media industries. Through seminars, directed study and experiential learning, you will explore the employment and self-employment opportunities in these industries.

    • Independent Project (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      The independent project represents the culmination of the theoretical and practical learning and assessment you have engaged in over the course of the degree. This module allows you to choose one of two pathways. Pathway 1 includes either writing a dissertation, or a final creative project. Pathway 2 is a work placement project.

    • Long-form Journalism (30 Credits) - Optional

      This module prepares you for researching and producing long-form journalism from conception to consumption. You will take a systematic approach to long-form journalism, developing in-depth research methods and storytelling techniques, along with practical skills in writing, broadcasting, or digital journalism.

    • The Newsroom (30 Credits) - Optional

      This module introduces the relevant concepts concerning professional newsroom environments and practices, including professional socialisation, production workflows, gate keeping practices, and the impact of convergence. It also aims to give you the practical skills in operating in a multi-platform and digital newsroom environment through a series of Newsdays.

    • Journalism, Money and Power (30 Credits) - Optional

      How tangled are politics with economics, and how does journalism perform its watchdog function by holding power to account if they themselves are suffering from their own form of crisis? What are the power structures behind journalism that affect and influence its production? How do journalism, money and power interrelate? This module interrogates and deconstructs a number of issues to better understand the role journalism plays at the centre of mediating power: shaping it, supporting it, representing and framing it, and holding it to account.

    • Global Journalism and News Cultures (30 Credits) - Optional

      The approach of this module is two-fold: to analyse how the news media landscape is responding to a globalizing world, but also to understand some of the nuances that can be found within different countries and cultural systems. How can we understand this new phenomenon, including the ways different countries and different cultures report – and are reported on?

    • International and Digital PR (30 Credits) - Optional

      This is not a Journalism module, but we are offering it to our students. The outline provided would need to be checked with the PR, advertising and marketing programme.

Classes are held at our Dubai Knowledge Park campus Sunday to Thursday between 8:30am and 6:30pm. Additional sessions may be scheduled over the weekend or holiday periods and you should expect to receive notice of these in advance.

You will be actively involved in a range of learning, teaching and assessment approaches as part of your programme. These approaches ensure that you are involved and engaged by placing you at the centre of your own learning. You will be required to actively participate in learning activities and engagement with your fellow students, both individually and collaboratively. Faculty increasingly use existing and emerging technologies and your programme will be facilitated using a variety of media and online tools (My Learning on UniHub, podcasts, wikis, etc.) which will allow you access to a diverse range of online resources and learning materials. By engaging in e-learning you will also be developing skills of which are essential for your learning and highly valued by employers. Such skills including flexibility, communication, IT skills and team work.

We accept students with a diverse range of entry qualifications and from varying backgrounds. The following international qualifications are normally considered for admission:

Successful completion of the Middlesex University International Foundation Programme (IFP)*** (equivalent programmes from other Universities/Colleges/Institutes will be considered).
Indian Secondary School Certificates issued by the CBSE/ISC boards/NIOS/All State Boards may be considered: minimum grade of 60% overall
Minimum two, maximum three subjects, with grades of B,B,C (three subjects) or with A*, A* (two subjects)
You must have passed the full IB Diploma. In some cases applicants will also need to have studied certain subjects at Standard or Higher Level. If you are unsure about the suitability of your qualifications or would like help with your application, please contact for support.

Students who have completed their GCSEs are eligible to join our International Foundation Programme – a one year programme to prepare students for entry onto our Undergraduate Programmes. Please note that students must meet the British AS and A Level entry requirements in order to gain entry into the First Year of any one of our Undergraduate Programmes.

Students with American High School Diploma are eligible to join our Foundation programme. However, if you have passed the American High School Diploma with the university required GPA and SAT or ACT or AP Scores you may be eligible for direct entry into Year 1 of the undergraduate programme. The BA Honours Journalism and Communication degree has been designed with a specific understanding of the extension of journalistic practices and of communications production throughout the economy. Equally, the continuing development and distribution of digital communications technologies provide an opportunity for students to work innovatively and gainfully as freelancers. The curriculum is designed to equip students with skills allowing them to benefit from this situation. Links with the employment market are arranged through internships with the assistance of the Careers and Employability Service; visiting speakers from relevant sections of the media industry and field trips. Staff with ongoing practical and professional experience all help students in furthering their career goals.
