Education Students Take Their Learning Outside the Classroom
- Tuesday, 10 December 2024
Education students from Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai have taken part in a variety of impactful sessions and field trips aimed at enhancing their understanding of educational practices, student engagement, and creative expression.
These events, held throughout term one, provided students with valuable hands-on experiences that will help shape their future careers in education.
On 24 October, students participated in a session led by Marina Judd, the founder of The Holistic Academy, where they explored the therapeutic power of art. The session focused on how creative expression can be used to regulate emotions and foster well-being, learning about the steps to becoming an art therapist and exploring methods for using art as a tool for emotional healing.
On the same day another group of students attended a session led by Lee Bossler, Assistant Head of Pastoral Care at Emirates International School. The session centered on the importance of building strong relationships with students and how these connections can positively influence student engagement and behaviour. Practical strategies were shared to help students establish meaningful relationships in their future classrooms, fostering a more positive and supportive learning environment.
On October 29 third year students visited OliOli, a children's museum that offers interactive activities allowing students to apply educational theories in real-world settings. They explored how experiential learning can enhance creativity and how to encourage students to enter a state of ‘flow’ during learning activities, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
The same students also attended the World Early Childhood Forum in Abu Dhabi, where they participated in discussions about early childhood development. The forum covered key topics such as the importance of cultural identity in early education, the role of outdoor spaces and play in supporting child development, and ongoing policy changes that shape early childhood education worldwide.
Most recently, on 25 November 2024, first year Education and Psychology with Education students visited Horizon International School. Principal Darren Gale explained the school's culture and how it is reflected in the behaviour and attitudes of both students and staff, and how it plays a key role in shaping the overall educational experience.
Dr Yousra Osman, Campus Programme Coordinator and Senior Lecturer in Education at MDX Dubai, said: “All of these activities are part of a broader initiative to provide students with real-world experiences that enhance their professional development.
“These sessions and field trips equip them with valuable knowledge and skills that will contribute to their growth as future educators.”
