POV: It’s your first day at university and you’re feeling a mix of excitement and undeniable nerves. You’re starting a new life milestone, and you’ll remember this moment forever. No pressure, right?
But whether you’re heading to a university in a new country or staying close to home, your university is there to help you. Here's our comprehensive guide to ensure you're well-prepared and confident on your first day.

Start your day early

Start your day early to avoid a last-minute rush. Plan your commute in advance and give yourself plenty of time to travel to campus, ensuring you’re familiar with your transportation options for getting to and from university. For students at Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai, whether you’re using the student accommodation shuttle service, the metro shuttle service or your own mode of transport, it’s important to know how long it takes to reach the university. Aim to arrive early so you can start your day stress-free, allowing for buffer time in case of any unexpected delays. This way you’ll arrive at the university calm and composed.

Essentials upon arrival

There are a wide range of services offered by universities, from completing your application process to something as simple as setting up your student emails address. Make sure you’re aware of those services on your first day to help you get settled in. At MDX Dubai, our Student Support Hub will be open for new students joining this September, to assist you with any questions or concerns you might have, from academic inquiries to personal support services. They can provide you with a wealth of resources and services, including timetables, student finance and student ID cards to booking transportation and accommodation.

Get to know your way around the campus

Take a tour of the different blocks and locations around the university. Locate your classrooms, lecture halls, and important facilities like the library, cafeteria, student support services, and recreational areas. Knowing where everything is will save you time and stress in the future. Don't hesitate to ask for directions or join a campus tour if available!

First week activities

Participate in the fresher activities at your university, so that you can get acquainted with the campus and its student life. These events will help you meet new people, join new clubs or sports teams, and potentially make friends that will be with you for your entire university experience. This is new to all of you, so there’s no need to be nervous!

At MDX Dubai, the Week of Welcome will take place from 16 to 20 September featuring exciting social activities, entertainment and workshops to participate in. It’s a fantastic opportunity for new and returning students to meet new friends and discover what to expect from student life at the university.

Introductory classes

Make sure to check your student timetable and attend any introductory classes scheduled for your first day. The MDX Central App, exclusive for MDX Students, allows you to view timetables, mark class attendance, make enquiries and stay updated with campus news and events, so make sure you have everything that you need downloaded in advance. If you’re unsure, you can visit the Student Support Hub and they can help you!

Explore the on-site food court

Take some time off to explore your campus on-site food court, where you can easily grab a meal and recharge for the rest of the day. Whether you’re grabbing a quick snack or sitting down for a meal, it's also an excellent opportunity to socialise with other students if you can put yourself out there! Dubai Knowledge Park has a large food court that services many different universities, giving Middlesex University Dubai students the opportunity to meet a diverse range of personalities and like-minded individuals.
