Yasmeen Hamid
BA Honours Business Management (Finance)
Class of 2023
How was your university experience with MDX?
Despite some disruptions caused by the pandemic, my years at university were great. I learnt a lot about myself and met some of my best friends during that time. My professors were very supportive and always encouraged me to do my best, which not only helped me academically but also to grow as a person.
Do you have any specific memories that highlight your experience?
The days my friends and I celebrated scoring well in our assignments after weeks of hard work are definitely some of the best memories I have during my time at university.
What was your dream career when you went to Uni? And did that change in the process of your studies?
I always had a keen interest in the finance industry since I was in high school, and I am grateful to be working in an industry where I engage with a variety of financial institutions every day. To me, a dream career is one that I find interesting and comes with different experiences and challenges. Having a job in consulting means new clients, projects, and experiences which allow me to continue learning new things every day.
What do you do for a career now? And how did you find yourself there?
I am currently an Associate Consultant at Grant Thornton UAE. I work with a great team and mentors who inspire me to do my best every day. Taking the time to complete internships before graduating definitely helped build my resume and set a good foundation for me to grow professionally.
How has your degree helped your current role and how do you see if helping your progression in the future?
My degree has helped me in countless ways which I will always be grateful for. I am lucky to be working in the same line of work which was the focus of my favourite module in university (ACC73170 Corporate Accountability), taught by Ms Rashita Puthiya, who made it a very enjoyable experience for me. The content she taught in theory made it a lot easier for me to apply it in practice. Other skills I gained as a student from paying attention to the details in my assignments and creating presentations have become very useful in my day-to-day tasks that involve reports and proposals for our clients.
Do you have a message for current and graduating students?
I would say the most important message I have for students is to invest in your friendships. You’re around lots of people who are around your same age, and share similar goals, ambitions, and interests when you are at university, so I would definitely say to take advantage of that. Building strong friendships will allow you to start the journey of your new life post-graduation with a solid support system of people who have been there with you since day one. Also, work hard and make it your goal to do your best as what you learn in university, this will most definitely come into use after you graduate. Lastly, taking the time to complete internships during the summer is very important as it builds your technical and interpersonal skills which will be very helpful when it is time to start your first full-time job. It is certainly not easy securing your first internship, but make sure to attend career fairs and reach out to your connections and things will take off from there.
