Alumni Spotlight – Shaikh Fahad

MDX Dubai alumni are a dynamic group of professionals across a number of key industries, driven strongly by a passion to excel! Shaikh Fahad from the graduating class of 2016 has successfully entered the marketing world, securing a management position in the prestigious Arena MEA group - a leading events service provider.

We met with Shaikh to hear his story in more detail, so let's dive into Shaikh’s exciting experience at MDX and hear firsthand about his fascinating employment journey.

How was your university experience with MDX?
My university experience was enriching and diverse. On my course, students came from all over the world, and it was wonderful to be exposed to so many elements of different cultures. Middlesex University Dubai offers a multicultural environment that fosters learning and personal growth. Many cultural events were held on campus including International Day which I particularly enjoyed. The faculty was supportive, and the curriculum was well-structured to meet industry needs.

Do you have any specific memories that highlight your experience?
One of my favourite memories was participating in a research programme, where we travelled to Singapore to learn about Tourism anthropology and its ill effects. It was a phenomenal experience where I made friendships and memories! I learnt a lot both academically and on life theoretically.

What was your dream career when you went to university? And did that change in the process of your studies?
Initially, I wanted to pursue a career in tourism. However, during my studies, I developed a strong interest in marketing. The courses and projects I worked on helped me realise that marketing aligns more closely with my skills and interests.

What do you do for a career now and how did you get there?
I currently work as a Marketing Manager at a company called Arena MEA. I got this role through a combination of networking and applying for job openings. My university experience provided me with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this position.

How has your degree helped you in your current role and how do you see it helping your progression in the future?
My degree has been invaluable in my current role. It provided me with a solid foundation in business principles and marketing strategies. I received plenty of support in research and presentation skills, and we participated in a lot of case study competitions. The course content helped me with a lot of soft skills, such as deadlines, people management, understanding situations and plenty more.

In the future, I see my degree helping me progress into more senior roles, such as a Marketing Director, where I can apply my knowledge to drive business growth.

Do you have a message for current students and graduating students?
To current and graduating students, I would say: stay curious, be open to new experiences, and build strong connections with your peers and professors. These relationships can lead to valuable opportunities and lifelong friendships. Also, don't be afraid to explore different career paths until you find what truly aligns with your passions and strengths.

So, make the most of it, these are your golden days. This is the time you will never get back again- just enjoy your time at Middlesex University!
