Enhanced MDX Studio facilities to support UAE’s filmmaking talent

  • Thursday, 16 March 2023

We are delighted to unveil our enhanced, state-of-the-art Film Lab, MDX Studios. Designed to provide an immersive and holistic film education and support the development of the UAE's burgeoning film sector, MDX Studios provides our talented student filmmakers with exclusive access to state-of-the-art equipment, including RED camera kits, a dedicated Podcast Studio, Dolby Atmos Theatre and Mixing Studio, recording studio, and many more facilities as part of the studio setup.

RED camera kits are accredited for use by international media giants such as Netflix, and with Dolby Atmos being the premier sound technology for the film and cinema industry, our students are able to produce work that is ready for distribution on top OTT streaming platforms and in movie theatres straight out of their university studies.

The new MDX Studio facilities were officially inaugurated on 9 March 2023 by Rebecca Lawrence, Chair of the Middlesex University Board of Directors; Professor Nic Beech, Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University; and Professor Carole-Anne Upton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Global Innovation and Impact. All three were in Dubai to visit our campus alongside the Class of 2022 Graduation Ceremonies on 11 and 12 March 2023, which saw our BA Honours Film Class of 2022 graduates walk the stage to collect their hard-earned British degrees.

Powered by an innovative script-to-screen teaching philosophy, MDX Studios is one of the leading film schools in the UAE. The faculty are industry practitioners alongside academics and bring this unique experience directly to the classroom, ensuring students are immersed in every stage of the filmmaking process, from ideation and screenwriting to production and distribution. MDX Studios was awarded the ‘Best Media Centre’ in the region at the Forbes Middle East Higher Education Awards 2019, and we have continued to go from strength to strength ever since.

Our students have won extraordinary industry awards and are consistently recognised for their incredible work, including Class of 2022 graduate Evelyn Jude Rodrigues, who saw her university project Ghar released on Paus as part of the Paus Premieres Festival 2022. At the annual Premiere de MDX Studios, our final year students are also able to screen their projects on the big screen at Roxy Cinemas in Dubai and celebrate their accomplishments, before they step out into the industry as already successful filmmakers.
