MDX Dubai Launches Exciting New Alumni Connect Portal at Exclusive Iftar Event

  • Thursday, 3 April 2025

On 19 March 2025, Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai welcomed over 150 graduates from over the University’s 20-year history, to network and share their successes at an unforgettable iftar evening, which also served as the launch of the new MDX Alumni Connect portal.

Held in the grand ballroom of the Dubai Media One Hotel, the evening brought graduates together to break their fast, reconnect with classmates and faculty, and reflect on their journey, all in the true spirit of Ramadan.

The iftar dinner was opened by Professor Cedwyn Fernandes, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Middlesex University and Director of Middlesex University Dubai, who recognised the significant development of the university which opened in 2005 with just 28 students. The alumni network has since grown to over 11,000 Middlesex University Dubai alumni, who are working and thriving in the UAE and beyond.

Throughout the evening, Professor Fehmida Hussain, Deputy Director of Engagement and Student Experience and Chair of Alumni Association; and Dr Engie Bashir, Senior CEI Lecturer at MDX Dubai, proudly launched the MDX Alumni Connect portal, a collaborative initiative between the Centre for Innovation in Human Experience (CIHx) and the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department. The portal has been developed in-house by TECHRUPTERS, CIHx’s newly launched software production house led by Dr Engie.

The all-in-one portal provides alumni with access to a growing directory, which in turn means that they can easily reach out and digitally network with peers from across different graduating classes and departments. Members of the free portal will also gain exclusive access to events, and be offered opportunities for professional development and industry exposure.

Fathima Riffai, BSc Information Technology Class of 2024, was valedictorian for her class and was honoured to make a speech during the alumni iftar event. Fathima said: “The iftar was a beautiful opportunity to reconnect with my classmates. I feel very lucky to be a graduate of a university with such a commitment to keeping in touch with their alumni, and ensuring they have support even after graduation day. I am already a member of the MDX Dubai Alumni LinkedIn community, and I really look forward to being part of MDX Alumni Connect portal so that I can continue to network and build my career; it is such an added advantage of being an MDX Dubai graduate.”

Professor Fehmida added a heartfelt message to all the alumni: “You are a vital part of this institution—not just as past students but as lifelong members of our community, contributing to our university's growth. We are proud of your every achievement, and we look forward to keeping in touch throughout your prosperous journey, wherever life takes you!”

The MDX Dubai Alumni Association is continually working on new ways to engage alumni; previous events have included a reunion evening on campus, and a lively padel tournament between alumni and faculty. The introduction of the portal will allow even more events and activities to engage the alumni community.

Dr Engie added: “We look forward to welcoming alumni into MDX Alumni Connect and this is just the beginning: a mentor-mentee programme is also in development. This initiative will offer experienced alumni the opportunity to guide and support recent graduates as they transition into their professional careers.”
