Eid in Dubai is a significant and festive occasion, celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. There are two major Eid celebrations which take place:

  • Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. The date of Eid al-Fitr depends on the sighting of the moon and changes each year. It is celebrated with morning prayers, called the Eid prayer, which is usually held in large open areas, mosques, or designated prayer grounds across the country. People gather in large numbers to pray together. Before the prayer, Muslims are required to give a form of charity called Zakat al-Fitr, to help those in need, ensuring that everyone can join in the celebrations. After the prayer, families gather to share meals and enjoy festive foods. Traditional dishes like machboos (a spiced rice dish), luquaimat (sweet dumplings), and knafeh (a dessert) are commonly served. It’s also customary to exchange gifts, particularly money (Eidi), and visit relatives and friends.
  • Eid al-Adha
Eid al-Adha takes place about two months after Eid al-Fitr, coinciding with the completion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. The date also varies depending on the lunar calendar. It is celebrated with prayer, similar to Eid al-Fitr, the day begins with an early morning prayer, often followed by a sermon. The main event of Eid al-Adha is the sacrifice of an animal, typically a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. The meat from the sacrifice is distributed among family, friends, and those in need. Families gather for meals and socialising. Like Eid al-Fitr, it’s a time for wearing your best clothes, visiting friends, and enjoying traditional foods.

Celebrating Eid in Dubai
Eid celebrations in Dubai are vibrant, festive, and full of cultural traditions, blending both Islamic customs and modern, globalised festivities. As one of the most dynamic cities in the UAE, Dubai hosts a variety of activities that make Eid a memorable occasion for both locals and visitors. Both Eids are public holidays in the UAE. Many businesses, government offices, and schools are closed during this time. The UAE becomes lively with decorations, especially in shopping malls and public spaces. Events such as concerts, fireworks, and cultural performances often take place. People often go shopping for new clothes and gifts for their families.

Eid Prayers and Religious Observances:
The day begins by attending the special Eid prayers at mosques across Dubai. Some of the most popular places for prayers include the Grand Mosque, Jumeirah Mosque, and large prayer grounds such as Dubai World Trade Centre and Dubai Festival City. This is a peaceful and reflective way to mark the start of the holiday.

Traditional Clothing:
It’s customary to wear new or special clothes for Eid. For men, this might include traditional attire like a Kandura , and for women, it could be an Abaya or other formal wear. People often wear bright, festive clothing, and there is a sense of pride in dressing up for the occasion.

Cleaning and Preparing the Home:
Many families thoroughly clean and decorate their homes in preparation for Eid. It's a time to refresh their living spaces, welcoming the joy and positivity of the holiday. Applying perfume is an important part of the celebration. Many people wear their best scents to mark the festive occasion.

Reflection and Gratitude:
Both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are deeply spiritual holidays. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting and prayer, and is a time for spiritual reflection, gratitude, and giving thanks. Eid al-Adha, on the other hand, is a time to reflect on community welfare.

Celebrating Togetherness
Eid is not only a time for religious observance but also a time for community bonding, reflection, and gratitude for the blessings of life. Visiting family and friends is a major part of the celebration, and many Emiratis take the time to visit their elders and offer greetings. Some families organise community events or share their meals with those less fortunate.

Eid Shopping and Mall Activities:
Dubai’s iconic shopping malls go all-out for Eid, with festive decorations, discounts, and special promotions. The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, and City Walk offer exclusive Eid sales, giving you the chance to shop for new clothes, jewellery, and electronics. You can also find pop-up shops and special Eid collections in these malls. Many malls host fashion shows showcasing the latest trends in traditional and contemporary Eid wear, with designers offering exclusive Eid collections. During Eid, markets and street vendors pop up across Dubai, offering traditional clothes, accessories, perfumes, and delicious street food. These markets create a festive atmosphere where you can enjoy shopping and socialising.

Entertainment and Festivals:
There are many public celebrations including parades, and performances. Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) often coincides with Eid, bringing massive discounts, entertainment shows, and activities like raffle draws and prize giveaways. The festival offers a wide range of activities for shoppers and families. Dubai is famous for its spectacular fireworks during Eid. You can watch amazing firework shows at landmarks like Burj Khalifa, Dubai Creek, Jumeirah Beach, and Global Village. These events light up the sky and bring large crowds to enjoy the celebration. Dubai hosts many live concerts, comedy shows, and performances during Eid. You can attend concerts featuring popular artists, or enjoy traditional Arabic music and dance performances at various venues. You can experience cultural activities such as folk dances, live Arabic music, and drumming performances at locations like Dubai Opera, Al Seef, and Global Village.

Luxury and Fine Dining Experiences:
Dubai's luxury hotels and resorts offer lavish Eid brunches and buffets, with international and traditional dishes. Hotels like Atlantis The Palm, Burj Al Arab, and Jumeirah Beach Hotel provide elegant dining experiences with views, live music, and entertainment.

Outdoor and Family Activities:
One of the most popular activities in Dubai is the Eid Desert Safari. You can go dune bashing, enjoy a traditional Barbecue dinner, ride camels, and experience Bedouin-style entertainment under the stars. Many of Dubai’s hotels and resorts host beach parties, poolside events, and family-friendly activities during Eid. You can relax by the pool, enjoy beach games, or try water sports at resorts like Jumeirah Beach or The Palm Jumeirah. You may want to enjoy a day at Dubai’s world-class theme parks such as IMG Worlds of Adventure, Dubai Parks and Resorts (which includes Motiongate and Legoland), or Aquaventure Waterpark at Atlantis. Many of these places offer special promotions and fun activities for the whole family during Eid. At The Dubai Mall, you can visit the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo or take a glass-bottom boat ride through the aquarium to experience marine life up close.
