Your Guide to Starting Uni: FAQs and Must-Knows

Starting university is a huge milestone, and we know you're probably feeling a mix of emotions. It’s completely normal to have a million questions, from what your first day will be like to what you need to bring and how to make the most of the Week of Welcome.
To help you feel more prepared, we’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions by new students just like you! Think of this guide as your go-to survival kit for starting university life smoothly.

Q. Can we join for all the Week of Welcome (WoW) days?
A. Yes, you can. There will be activities happening every day from Monday – Friday and you are welcome to join in with whatever appeals to you! To learn more about what's in store for you at the Week of Welcome, visit https://www.mdx.ac.ae/week-of-welcome
Q. What are the first day essentials/what do we need to bring on the first day of class?
A. We’ve put together some must-know tips and essentials for your first day at university here and more tips on our Instagram page.
Q. What is the dress code?
A. We don’t have a formal dress code; however, we do ask students to be mindful of the local culture and dress respectfully. Try to cover your chest, shoulders and knees in a way that is comfortable for you; treat university as professional space.
Q. Will Week 0 be only for the clubs, or will we have classes?
A. There is a special timetable for with specific classes that introduce you to your faculty and give you an overview of the academic year ahead.
Q. Do we have to join all the scheduled classes during week of welcome?
A. The Yes, we highly recommend joining all of the scheduled classes during the Week of Welcome. These sessions have been specifically designed to help you settle into your programme, meet your classmates, and know what to expect in your upcoming modules.
Q. How do we find locations for the classrooms?
A. The location of your class will be noted on your timetable. When you arrive on campus, if you come to Block 15 or Block 16, you will be greeted by friendly volunteers who can provide you with a campus map and help you find your way around.
Q. How do we join a club, and can we join more than one?
A. All the sports teams and social clubs will have a stand during WoW where you can register your interest to join. Join us on @wearemdx Instagram page to view all the sports teams and social clubs and to stay updated. And yes, you can join more than one! They’re completely free to join and all levels of experience are accepted!
Q. When will new students get their timetables?
A. All students will be able to receive their timetables via the MDX Central App or desktop. There is a special timetable for Week of Welcome, and then the academic timetable starts from the following Monday.
Q. Are students supposed to re-enrol, and how?
A. Yes, all returning students are required to re-enrol via MyMDX. Once you log in, you will see a tile called ‘Enrolment’ and from there you can follow the steps to complete the enrolment.
Q. When will students get their student ID to sign into the portal?
A. All of your essential information such as Student ID and passwords will be sent to you in the lead up to your first day via email. If you have any questions or queries about logging in or receiving your details, we recommend attending the Student Support Hub where you can get assistance.
Q. How do I get my MDX ID card?
A. All You will be sent an email that explains how to apply for your Student ID Card after you’ve enrolled. Once you’ve uploaded your details and submitted them, our IT department will print your card and let you know when you can collect it.
Q. Is week of welcome for PG students too?
A. Yes, all students including postgraduate students are welcome and encouraged to attend Week of Welcome!
Q. Is there transportation provided during Week of Welcome?
A. Yes, during the Week of Welcome, both the Myriad shuttle to and from the DKP campus and the Dubai Internet City Metro shuttle will be running, and they are completely free for students! You can also find out more about our transportation services available for students here.
Q. What should I bring in my bag on the first day?
A. Whatever you want! We recommend bringing a notepad, pen, water bottle, your mobile phone, a laptop if this is how you prefer to take notes, some money/debit card, your NOL Card (transport card) if you have one, and some snacks.
