- Thursday, 19 September 2024
Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai faculty were in Washington, D.C. last week attending the World Bank’s high-level conference on Trade and Uneven Development.
The event, ran in partnership with the editorial team from the Journal of International Economics, took pace over 12 and 13 September 2024, and gathered policymakers, academics, and industry experts to discuss the complex relationship between international trade and development, particularly in the context of rising inequality and environmental concerns.
DX Dubai were represented by Senior Law Lecturer Yasmin Sebah. Yasmin said: “The insights from the conference underscored the nuanced challenges we face in global trade.
“The talks covered a wide range of issues including concerns that trade is increasingly seen as a zero-sum game, where one nation’s gain is another’s loss. The rise of protectionism, with policymakers resorting to unilateral solutions that often contradict established economic research and inequality, environmental degradation, and resource depletion.
“Bringing these perspectives into the classroom allows me to prepare students for the complexities of international law and trade in a world marked by both interdependence and conflicting policies.”
MDX Dubai prioritises faculty engagement in international forums to enhance academic offerings. By participating in events like the World Bank conference, faculty members can share fresh insights and critical analyses with their students.
