Effective Study Tips and Stress Relief Techniques for Students During the Exam Season
- Wednesday, 3 April 2024
Exams can be a challenging time for students as they come with exam stress, anxiety, and limited time to study, but with the right strategies, you can navigate through them successfully while keeping the stress at bay. Here are some valuable tips to help you study effectively and manage stress during this season:
1. Plan Your Study Schedule:
Create a study schedule that breaks down your study material into manageable segments. Allocate specific time slots for each subject or topic, ensuring balanced coverage of all subjects and prioritise them accordingly. Make sure to include regular breaks in your schedule to maintain focus and prevent burnout.
2. Stay Organised
It’s important to keep your study space clutter-free with minimum distractions, and a comfortable chair to sit on, and adequate lighting to study. Calendars, planners, and study apps are examples of useful tools that can help you stay organised and meet deadlines. Focus on the high-priority subjects or topics first based on their importance.
3. Use Active Study Techniques
Active studying is an approach in which students interact and engage cognitively with the subject they are studying. Some of these techniques include engaging actively with the material by taking notes, summarising key points, creating flash cards, and creating mind maps. Practice active recall by quizzing yourself or explaining concepts to someone else. The use of textbooks, online tutorials, and past exam papers will help reinforce your understanding.
4. Seek Support
It’s always good to reach out to your teachers, classmates, or academic support services when you encounter difficulties or need some clarifications on an area of study. Collaborate with your classmates by forming study groups, sharing resources, and discussing study strategies. This will not only help you understand subjects better but will also foster shared learning and growth. Make time to talk to friends or family members about your feelings and concerns, seeking emotional support when needed.
5. Practice Self-care
Indulge in self-care activities such as regular exercise, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep to improve your physical and mental well-being. Take short breaks during study sessions to relax and recharge, engage in activities you enjoy, and practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
6. Celebrate Achievements, No Matter How Small
Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small, which will help boost your confidence and motivation. Reward yourself for reaching milestones or completing challenging tasks, whether it’s with a treat, a break, or a fun activity without getting in the way of your exam needs.
Exams are just one aspect of your academic journey and do not define your worth or capabilities. Rather than comparing yourself to others, focus on your progress and efforts and keep a positive mindset, as exams are an opportunity for growth and learning. By planning ahead, staying organised, and maintaining perspective, you can sail through exams with confidence and resilience. Remember, you’ve got this!
