As an academic, I frequently engage in conversations with colleagues, students, friends, and industry experts to understand how the professional landscape is evolving. Recent global developments, including the COVID-19 pandemic and, more recently, Generative AI, have sparked discussions about the future of work.

These discussions have highlighted a paradigm shift beyond traditional corporate structures and have provided individuals with a glimpse of new possibilities. With the rise of remote work and changing attitudes towards employment, many workers are reevaluating their work-life balance. In the UAE, for instance, the introduction of the new Labour Law in 2022 paved the way for alternative forms of employment.

Today’s students can define their own careers

This shift in attitude signifies that employability is no longer confined to predefined norms; it has become fluid and adaptable. From freelancing to entrepreneurship, today's students have the power to shape their own careers, transitioning between industries and geographic locations while applying diverse skill sets to different roles.

As the concept of employability evolves, the nature of jobs will change as well. In fact, the careers that will captivate students in the future might not even exist today. Middlesex University Dubai recognises that the most critical skill students need to thrive in the global job market is resilience. Accordingly, we have revamped our teaching and learning environment to foster this vital attribute. Our students have access to various opportunities, such as internships, volunteer programmes, participation in research projects, hackathons, industry competitions and the coordination of social clubs. These avenues enable them to develop transferable skills that are highly valued in the real world.

“There is one fundamental skill that students should master during their university education: the art of learning.”

Your professional journey needs a digital transformation

Moreover, students must familiarise themselves with the technologies shaping modern employment, even if they do not aspire to pursue technical roles. Generative Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and Robotics are driving the automation of tasks that were previously performed by humans. For instance, the process of job applications has undergone a radical transformation. In the past, a printed CV sufficed; however, today, many companies employ powerful AI tools to identify and assess potential candidates. Consequently, future employees must possess a flexible mindset to adapt to new digital tools and continually acquire new information. Universities must prioritise the development of this core soft skill to equip students with the ability to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market.

Embrace inclusivity and global communities

Furthermore, students should embrace inclusive environments that value and celebrate diversity in abilities. Middlesex University Dubai fosters a culture where students have the opportunity to network with individuals from diverse cultural and intellectual backgrounds. As Dubai's largest UK university, with over 4,800 students representing 120+ nationalities, we strive to make education accessible for all. We offer comprehensive support for students of determination support and prioritise the well-being of our students and staff.

Learn to learn, and the world is yours

In light of these developments, there is one fundamental skill that students should master during their university education: the art of learning. By cultivating a strong aptitude for learning, students will be empowered to tackle challenges head-on, find innovative solutions, and chart their own path to personal success. This skill will be invaluable in a future where the only constant is change.
